(X @IAF_MCC) India has achieved a huge feat in domestic defence production as the first ever locally-assembled Airbus C-295 transport plane is ready for testing at the Tata-Airbus plant in Vadodara, Gujarat. This is a historic moment in India’s military aviation industry since this is the first time an Indian private sector company has produced a military aircraft on this scale. Here’s everything you need to know about the aircraft and why it matters. What Is the C-295? The C-295 is a tactical military aircraft capable of transporting troops, carrying cargo, air ambulances, disaster relief operations, and special missions. The aircraft has been built by Airbus and currently serves more than 40 customers in the world, with some of them considering it the most versatile military transport aircraft in its category.
According to Times of India, the aircraft is able to accommodate 71 troops and up to 50 paratroopers, carry military cargo, take off from unprepared and short runways, and conduct humanitarian and disaster relief missions. Why Is This Aircraft Significant For India? This is India’s first privately manufactured military aircraft. The aircraft has been assembled by Tata Advanced Systems Limited in partnership with Airbus at the Final Assembly Line (FAL) facility in Vadodara. The project is being seen as a major step towards “Atmanirbhar Bharat" and reducing dependence on imported military platforms, the Economic Times reported. Until now, military aircraft manufacturing in India was largely dominated by state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The Vadodara facility itself was jointly inaugurated in 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez. How Many Aircraft Is India Buying? The deal between India and Airbus Defence and Space in 2021 was close to Rs 22,000 crore and involves the purchase of 56 C-295 aircraft from Airbus to replace the old fleet of Avro HS-748 in the Indian Air Force. According to Airbus, in accordance with this deal, 16 aircraft will be supplied as ready-to-fly from Spain, whereas the remaining 40 aircraft will be built and assembled in India through Tata Advanced Systems.
Why Does The Indian Air Force Need It? The C-295 will serve as a replacement for the ageing Avro planes that are operated by the IAF. The plane will be very helpful in enhancing airlifting capabilities, logistical support for border areas, troop movement, humanitarian aid, and conducting operations in rough terrains like the Himalayas, according to TOI. The capability of the plane to take off from shorter and semi-prepared airfields will be a great advantage in conducting military operations in distant locations. What Makes The ‘Made-in-India’ Version Important? The project is not just about assembling aircraft. Officials say the programme is helping create a domestic aerospace manufacturing ecosystem involving public-sector companies, MSMEs and private suppliers across India. According to reports, more than 13,000 parts will eventually be produced in India, and a large share of the aircraft structure is already being manufactured domestically. Tata’s Nagpur facility is reportedly producing nearly 80 per cent of the aircraft airframe before final assembly in Vadodara. Is India Ahead Of Schedule? Airbus had originally said the first Indian-made C-295 would roll out in September 2026.
But recent visuals and official updates suggest the aircraft may have been completed ahead of schedule. The Indian Air Force recently confirmed that the aircraft is preparing for its maiden flight. Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti, Deputy Chief of Air Staff, visited the Vadodara facility to review progress.
