According to the United States Secret Service, a suspect was killed after opening fire near a security checkpoint outside the White House grounds. Officials said Secret Service officers returned fire after the shooting began. The suspect was taken to hospital after being shot but later died from injuries. A bystander was also injured during the incident. No Secret Service personnel were hurt. Shooting near security booth The incident happened near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, close to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Sources familiar with the investigation told CBS News that the suspect began firing at a security booth where Secret Service officers were stationed.
Law enforcement sources said somewhere between 10 and 30 gunshots were fired during the exchange. Secret Service officers immediately responded with gunfire after the suspect opened fire. Officials said the suspect was wounded during the response operation before being taken into custody and transported to hospital. The identity of the suspect has not yet been officially released. The White House complex was temporarily placed under lockdown as security teams secured the area. The lockdown was lifted shortly before 7 p.m. after officials confirmed the immediate threat had ended.
Large numbers of law enforcement personnel remained deployed around the White House area following the incident. Bystander injured Authorities confirmed that a bystander was also wounded during the shooting. Officials did not immediately release details about the person’s condition or whether the injury occurred during the suspect’s gunfire or during the exchange with Secret Service officers. Incident comes weeks after White House Dinner Shooting Saturday’s shooting came nearly a month after another major security incident involving President Trump. On April 25, authorities said there was an attempted assassination plot targeting Trump while he attended the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner at a Washington hotel.
According to investigators, Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, was charged with attempting to kill the president. Allen recently pleaded not guilty in the case and remains in federal custody. The latest shooting near the White House is expected to renew concerns around presidential security and safety arrangements in Washington. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding Saturday evening’s shooting, including the suspect’s possible motive and movements before the attack. Security agencies have not yet said whether the suspect specifically intended to target the White House or Secret Service personnel. The investigation remains ongoing.
