(IMAGE: PTI FILE) Security Adviser Ajit Doval underlined the need for “mutual sensitivity, mutual interests and mutual respect" in India-China relations during talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, as the two sides reviewed progress in the normalisation of bilateral ties. Responding to a media query on discussions during Wang’s visit to India for the BRICS Security Advisers’ meeting, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Doval stressed that stable, predictable and constructive bilateral relations would contribute to enhanced trust and deeper understanding between the two countries.
“NSA underlined that stable, predictable and constructive bilateral relations will contribute to enhanced trust and deeper understanding between the two sides," Jaiswal said. Doval also emphasised the importance of both countries consistently displaying sensitivity towards each other’s issues of core concern. “This would be in keeping with our overall approach of mutual sensitivity, mutual interests and mutual respect," the Ministry of External Affairs said. The discussions focused on bilateral relations and reviewed recent developments as India and China continue efforts to normalise ties after relations came under severe strain following the eastern Ladakh military standoff that began in 2020. According to the MEA, the Doval-Wang talks were “constructive and forward-looking", with both sides noting progress towards gradual normalisation of relations. Wang, who is in New Delhi to attend a BRICS conclave, also called for greater attention to each other’s core concerns. According to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency, the Chinese foreign minister said it was “imperative" for India and China to respect each other’s core interests, properly handle sensitive issues and ensure that border-related matters do not affect the broader trajectory of bilateral ties.
Wang said the leaders of the two countries had agreed that China and India are partners rather than rivals and called for the implementation of the consensus reached between them. He also advocated restoring dialogue mechanisms and expanding cooperation in areas such as trade, finance, law enforcement and media. India and China have rolled out a series of confidence-building and engagement measures over the past year to rebuild ties following the prolonged border standoff in eastern Ladakh. Doval and Wang, who serve as the Special Representatives on the boundary question, last held Special Representatives-level talks in New Delhi in August 2025, which resulted in a number of decisions aimed at maintaining peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control.
