Abhishek Banerjee approaches Calcutta HC to travel abroad for eye treatment
Trinamool Congress General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee has moved the Calcutta High Court seeking relaxation of a condition imposed in connection with a case
Trinamool Congress General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee has moved the Calcutta High Court seeking relaxation of a condition imposed in connection with a case registered at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station, requesting permission to travel abroad for medical treatment related to an eye injury. Banerjee has filed an application before Justice Sougata Bhattacharyya, seeking modification of an earlier order that restricts him from leaving the country without the court's approval. On May 22, the court granted him protection from arrest in the case until July 31 or until further orders.
However, the order stipulated that he could not travel abroad without prior permission from the court and was required to inform the investigating officer at least 48 hours in advance of any travel plans. Read Full Story The case stems from a complaint lodged on May 15 by a resident of Baguiati at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station. The complainant submitted several video clips and alleged that certain remarks made in public speeches were provocative in nature. During the hearing, the court reportedly took note of the allegations and sought further examination of the matter.
In his latest plea, Banerjee has cited medical reasons for seeking permission to travel overseas. The TMC leader suffered serious injuries below one of his eyes in a road accident in October 2016 while returning to Kolkata from a party programme in Murshidabad. He underwent treatment at several hospitals in India before travelling abroad for specialised surgery and medical care. BANERJEE FACES ANOTHER COMPLAINT FOR ALLEGED SCAM Meanwhile, Banerjee is facing another complaint. Abhijit Das has filed a complaint at Bishnupur Police Station in South 24 Parganas alleging irregularities in the 'Shraddhargha Scheme'.
The complainant has sought an investigation into the source of funds used to provide monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 to around 76,000 senior citizens. He has alleged a scam involving approximately Rs 91 crore and demanded a probe into the beneficiaries of the scheme. No official response from Banerjee regarding the latest complaint was immediately available. Ends
