Calcutta HC Allows Abhishek Banerjee To Fly Abroad After Travel Curbs Over His Pre-Poll Remarks Published By, Last Updated: June 23, 2026, 19:24 IST Calcutta High Court allows Banerjee to travel abroad for eye treatment, temporarily lifting his travel ban linked to a case over alleged inflammatory pre-poll remarks. Rapid Read TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee. (File Image: PTI) The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday permitted Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee to travel overseas for medical treatment related to an eye ailment, granting temporary relief from restrictions imposed on his foreign travel, news agency IANS reported. Banerjee had moved a petition before the bench of Justice Sougata Bhattacharyya seeking relaxation of the travel curbs, stating that he needs to spend a week abroad for specialised treatment.
TMC MP Sought Permission Over Eye Treatment The TMC leader has reportedly been dealing with complications stemming from a serious road accident on the Durgapur Expressway several years ago while returning from a party programme in Murshidabad. He sustained severe injuries below the eye and has since undergone treatment at multiple hospitals in India and abroad. Travel Curbs Linked To Pre-Poll Speech Case The restriction on Banerjee’s overseas travel was imposed in connection with a case over alleged inflammatory remarks made during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election campaign. An FIR was registered against the Diamond Harbour MP at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station following a complaint accusing him of delivering provocative speeches between April 27 and May 3 and allegedly making remarks directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
On May 21, the Calcutta High Court had granted Banerjee protection from coercive action in the case until July 31 or until further orders, NDTV reported. However, the court directed that he could not leave the country without prior permission and must inform the investigating officer at least 48 hours before any movement. Considering his medical requirements, the High Court on Tuesday allowed Banerjee to travel abroad for treatment, temporarily easing the conditions attached to the earlier protective order.
