Congress seeks high-level probe in alleged Ujjain land scam by Mohan Yadav family

The Congress on Tuesday (June 23, 2026) demanded a high-level investigation by a committee led by a Supreme Court judge into the alleged land scam by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s family members after a report claimed that they purchased property where infrastructure projects were later announced. A report by an English daily has claimed, citing government land records, that Mr. Yadav’s wife, son and daughter-in-law, as well as members of his extended family, have purchased 168 acres of land through 137 plots in and around Ujjain from December 2023, when he replaced Shivraj Singh Chouhan, now Union Agriculture Minister, as the State’s CM to December 2025. The purchases were either made by them directly or through four real estate companies owned by them. The report claimed that most of these purchases were made in areas where government road projects or in areas where the Ujjain Master Plan, 2035, proposes turning agricultural land into residential or commercial properties.
आपसी लड़ाई कुर्सी… pic.twitter.com/RjV3xDtUJ2 — Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) June 23, 2026 Overall, the family has acquired 253 acres of land since 2021, when Mr. Yadav became a Minister in the State Government, the report claimed. His family has long been in the real estate business in and around the holy city of Ujjain. Yadav is a third-term MLA from Ujjain-South and has also been the chairperson of the Ujjain Development Authority (UDA) from 2004 to 2010, and the chairperson of the M.P. Tourism Development Corporation (MPTDC) from 2011 to 2013. Addressing a press conference in Bhopal, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Umang Singhar, said that the land prices were increased in a “well planned manner” by bringing projects there, and land was purchased in those areas before announcing the projects. “Certainly, the Chief Minister will say that ‘everything happened as per rules and law, and that we file the income tax’.
But our demand is that a Supreme Court judge should investigate this by forming a committee,” Mr. Singhar said, adding that the probe will reveal the people linked to the matter and who got benefited. “We know that the Chief Minister will not get this probed by an SIT or give answers. This is why we are demanding a probe by a Supreme Court judge-led committee,” he said, while also alleging that corruption of crores of rupees was going on in Ujjain in the name of Simhastha Kumbh Mela, 2028. Singhar went on to allege that similar irregularities and land scams had occurred in various other projects and cities like Indore, and sought that the names of companies and people involved in such deals be revealed. State Congress president Jitu Patwari asked if the government would make public the list of all land use change approvals for projects where Mr. Yadav’s family has bought land. Patwari also alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was involved in both “the Ayodhya Ram Temple donation theft scam as well as the land theft in Mahakaleshwar Temple city (Ujjain)”.
