Police Officer Among 3 Killed In Montreal Shooting. Accused Linked To 'Incel' Ideology Published By, Last Updated: June 23, 2026, 16:46 IST Montreal shooting leaves three dead, including officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, as links to 'incel' ideology draw scrutiny. Police Chief Fady Dagher speaks to media during a press conference near the scene. (Image: AFP) A shooting in Canada’s Montreal, which left three people dead, has brought the “incel" movement into the public spotlight. According to AFP, the shooting took place in the afternoon on Monday in a partly Jewish neighbourhood. In the incident, a police officer, a civilian, and the alleged gunman were killed. While police have identified the officer as Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, CBC News confirmed the civilian killed was Michael Mizrahi.
Montreal police chief Fady Dagher said Monday’s incident was “a tragedy, a nightmare." Why Is The Shooting Being Linked To Incel Ideology? Though the shooter’s motive has not been released publicly, AFP cited French language public broadcaster Radio Canada saying that the gunman was connected to “incel" ideology – a misogynistic worldview that fuelled the man responsible for one of Canada’s most deadly mass killings, a 2018 vehicle-ramming in Toronto that killed 10. As per BBC, “incel" is short for “involuntarily celibate" and in particular refers to online groups of men who feel that they can’t enter into sexual relationships. Typically, incel forums often include rants aimed at feminism and women. Interestingly, the term was first coined by Alana, who is known only by her first name, in the 1990s through a personal website called ‘Alana’s Involuntary Celibacy Project’, according to CNN. It soon was often used by her followers as they discussed feelings of shyness and social awkwardness. However, as the term spread, it began to take on different meanings. Meanwhile, Quebec Premier Christine Frechette has urged people to “avoid speculation" about what transpired.
