Objecting to a statement made by Minister R. Nirmalkumar that even relatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Union Home Minister Amit Shah could be appointed as Governors, BJP State president Nainar Nagenthran on Tuesday (June 23, 2026) charged that the Minister did not have a basic understanding of the Constitution. Referring to the Minister’s observations regarding the post of the Governor during an interaction with reporters, Mr. Nagenthran in a social media post said that Mr. Nirmalkumar’s “irresponsible” statement was aimed at bringing disrepute to the two leaders who have been serving the people of the country for over a decade now.
Charging that the law-and-order situation in the State was deteriorating and that the sexual crimes were on the rise, he contended that there was no difference between the TVK-led government and the erstwhile DMK government and that both were involved in “hate politics.” The BJP leader demanded an apology from the Minister for having made such comments against the Prime Minister, who has been appointing eminent persons with rich experience in politics, education, and public service as Governors.
Nagenthran further posed: “Why and how many times did you go to the Lok Bhavan when you failed to prove majority to form the government? Who all did you contact over the phone to form the government? Shall
I release the list? So, please do not pose such political stunts henceforth, Minister!” Nirmalkumar, during a press interaction recently, had said that even relatives of Mr. Modi and Mr. Shah could be appointed to the post of Governor.
