A major security incident occurred outside the White House when an armed suspect opened fire near a security checkpoint. According to the US Secret Service, the individual approached the checkpoint shortly after 6 PM Eastern Time, drew a weapon from a bag, and fired approximately three shots at posted officers. The Secret Service officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was subsequently transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
A civilian bystander was also hit during the gunfire, though it remains unclear whose bullets caused the injury. Authorities confirmed that no Secret Service personnel were injured and the White House security perimeter was not breached. President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the incident but was not impacted. Following the gunfire, heavy security was deployed around the area, and journalists present at the White House were instructed to seek shelter inside the press briefing room.
