The controversial football-themed statue installed outside the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata has been demolished. The structure, which depicted a football player with both legs interacting with a ball while the upper body featured only a football placed above the waist, was topped with a globe bearing the former Bengal government's Biswa Bangla logo.

A plaque at the site, which has now been uprooted, stated that the design was conceptualized by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Following its installation, the statue drew significant attention and varied reactions across social media platforms. Many users criticized the stylized visual effect, describing the architecture as 'grotesque', 'wild', and 'absolute madness'.

The structure was widely considered by critics to have brought a bad name to the city's otherwise celebrated architectural and cultural heritage, standing in stark contrast to historical landmarks like the Victoria Memorial. Following the formation of the new BJP government in the state, the Sports Minister promised the public on social media that the structure would be removed.

Fulfilling that promise, the statue has now been brought down, leaving only the two legs as the remaining remnants of the installation. The removal marks a significant shift at the iconic stadium, reflecting the current political transition and the changing landscape of West Bengal. News18 Mobile App OC VOICED
