A massive fire in Lucknow's Aliganj area has claimed 15 lives and left several injured. Investigations reveal severe civic and administrative lapses, with the building operating on a 34-kilowatt power load against an approved capacity of 20 kilowatts. Despite complaints of overloading over three months, the electricity department failed to take action. The tragedy also exposed the illegal conversion of a residential property into a commercial complex housing a coaching center, pet shop, and studio.
The four-storey building, including a basement, had only one entry and exit point, with access further restricted by auto-lock gates and biometric systems. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the injured and assured strict action. The state government has ordered a Special Investigation Team probe, suspended four officials, and arrested four individuals, including the building owner. Meanwhile, the mother of deceased victim Aditya Srivastava alleged a two-hour delay in rescue operations, claiming timely intervention could have saved lives.
