'Productive Discussions On Bilateral Trade Agreement': Piyush Goyal As India-US Talks Gather Pace Published By, Last Updated: June 23, 2026, 12:36 IST India and the US stepped up trade negotiations in New Delhi, with both sides signalling progress as efforts continue to finalise an interim trade agreement. India-US trade talks advance in New Delhi (Photo: X/@USAmbIndia) Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Tuesday expressed optimism over ongoing India-US trade negotiations, as senior officials from both countries met in New Delhi to push forward discussions on an interim trade pact and the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). Posting on X after meeting US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer and the visiting American delegation, Goyal said, “Warm welcome to US Trade Representative Amb Jamieson Greer, Sergio Gor and their delegation to the Department of Commerce." “Looking forward to productive discussions on the bilateral trade agreement between India and the US," he mentioned. Gor also highlighted the significance of the talks in a post, stating, “Great to be with Minister Piyush Goyal and Ambassador Greer today in New Delhi.
Ongoing discussions on finalising the trade deal between the US and India." Warm welcome to @USTradeRep Amb Jamieson Greer, @USAmbIndia Amb Sergio Gor and their delegation to @DoC_GoI. Looking forward to productive discussions on the bilateral trade agreement between 🇮🇳 & 🇺🇸. Piyush Goyal (@PiyushGoyal) June 23, 2026 The remarks came as Greer held talks with Goyal at Vanijya Bhawan in the national capital. According to news agency PTI, the discussions are focused on issues related to the first phase of the proposed bilateral trade agreement between the two countries. Greer is on an official visit to India for trade negotiations and is accompanied by a US trade delegation. PTI reported that Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and India’s chief negotiator Darpan Jain, who is also Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce, are participating in the meeting. The ministerial-level talks follow negotiations held earlier this month between chief negotiators from both sides in New Delhi from June 2 to June 4. Agrawal had earlier indicated that discussions between Goyal and Greer were expected to focus on giving final touches to the framework of the interim agreement.
On June 17, US President Donald Trump had said that India and the United States were “very close" to finalising the agreement. Earlier this month, Goyal had also stated that both countries were working to close the remaining gaps in the negotiations and were moving towards executing the first phase of the BTA by the middle of next month. Greer’s visit also follows recent discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France. The high-level meetings in New Delhi are centred on the United States-India Joint Statement and an interim agreement that forms part of bilateral trade negotiations launched by the two leaders on February 13, 2025. The talks are taking place against the backdrop of changes in the US tariff regime, which have prompted both countries to revisit elements of the framework announced earlier. Officials are expected to continue discussions over the coming days as India and the United States work towards concluding an interim trade arrangement and advancing the broader bilateral trade pact.
