A diamond exploration project in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district has yielded five diamonds during bulk sample testing, marking a significant milestone in the state’s search for new mineral resources. According to NMDC-CMDC Limited, the diamonds were recovered from bulk samples collected from the Baloda-Belmundi Diamond Block in the Saraipali region of Mahasamund. The five stones together weigh 1.22 carats. Of the recovered diamonds, two have been classified as gem-quality stones, while the remaining three fall under other categories.
Read Full Story The discovery was made after scientific testing of nearly 200 tonnes of mineral-bearing material collected from the exploration block. The programme involved stream sediment sampling, geophysical surveys and drilling activities to identify possible diamond-bearing zones. Officials said the findings confirm the presence of diamond mineralisation in the region. However, experts cautioned that the recovery of a limited number of diamonds does not automatically establish that the area is commercially viable for mining.
Further exploration, sampling and assessment will be required to determine the size, quality and economic potential of the deposit. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai described the development as an encouraging sign for the state’s mining sector and said efforts would continue to promote scientific exploration. The recovered diamonds have been placed in secure custody at NMDC’s facility in Panna, Madhya Pradesh, pending further evaluation and regulatory procedures.
The Baloda-Belmundi block has been under investigation for several years as part of efforts to identify new mineral resources in Chhattisgarh. The latest discovery is expected to help guide future exploration work in the area. Ends
