An NRI couple's candid admission about accumulating over $850,000 (approximately Rs 8.4 crore) in debt while pursuing the American Dream has struck a chord online. Sharing their story on Instagram, the couple revealed how a series of seemingly ordinary financial decisions gradually snowballed into a massive burden they never consciously planned to take on. The creators behind the Instagram page @moneyharmony123 said they moved to the United States at the age of 22 with aspirations familiar to many immigrants: a successful career, homeownership, financial stability, and a comfortable lifestyle. A good job. A house. A nicer car. A renovated kitchen. Vacations. An investment property,โ they wrote. According to the couple, none of these purchases felt reckless at the time. Each decision appeared reasonable and aligned with the lifestyle they envisioned for themselves. However, every upgrade brought with it an additional monthly payment, loan, or financial obligation. Over the years, those commitments quietly accumulated. The turning point came when they finally sat down to assess their finances and realised they were carrying a staggering $850,000 (around Rs 8.4 crore) in debt. Breaking down the figure, the couple revealed that their primary home mortgage stood at $400,000 (approximately Rs 4 crore), while an investment property mortgage accounted for another $270,000 (around Rs 2.7 crore).
They had also taken a kitchen renovation loan worth $150,000 (approximately Rs 1.5 crore) and accumulated $30,000 (around Rs 30 lakh) in credit card debt. โThe crazy part? We never sat down and decided to take on $850,000 of debt. It happened slowly while we were living life on autopilot,โ they admitted. Looking back, they said many of those choices felt like standard milestones of success, particularly for immigrants building a life abroad.
Rather than dwelling on the mistake, however, the couple has decided to take control of the situation. They have announced an ambitious goal of becoming completely debt-free within the next 1,200 days and have begun sharing a detailed roadmap of budgeting, repayments, and financial discipline with their followers as they work towards that target.
