(PTI/File) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday issued a stern warning to protesters in Park Circus, asserting that stone-pelting will be completely eliminated in the state, just like in Jammu and Kashmir. His remarks came after protests against the government’s actions, such as a ban on animal slaughter, restrictions on loudspeakers in religious places and the demolition of a factory, turned violent in Kolkata’s Park Circus area, where demonstrators allegedly pelted stones at police personnel and vandalised vehicles. After visiting the Park Circus Deputy Commissioner’s office and meeting police officers and injured personnel, Adhikari projected a tough law and order stance, asserting that the BJP government will not tolerate “hooliganism and anti-national activities".
‘Will Stop Stone-Pelting In Bengal’ “I came to see the injured police personnel and CRPF jawans, and understand the extent of their injuries. Yesterday, our entire force maintained law and order, prevented a major tragedy and protected people. I came here to tell them that the government stands firmly with them," Adhikari said while praising the police personnel for handling the situation. While people had the right to protest, the Bengal CM said a situation where people resort to stone-pelting while raising religious slogans will not be tolerated. He also drew a comparison with Jammu and Kashmir. Adhikari also called Sunday’s unrest “pre-planned", saying social media posts suggested prior mobilisation. He also took a swipe at the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration, saying the days when “policemen were left to get injured while the police minister sat back in an air-conditioned room are over." “I am making an appeal – do not repeat these things.
Listen carefully, this should be the first and the last such incident. We will not allow these to recur. Take this as the last warning. If such incidents are repeated, no one will be worse than me as the home minister," he stated. What Happened In Park Circus? Tensions escalated in Park Circus after a group of protesters gathered at the seven-point crossing in the Muslim-dominated locality and raised objections over recent restrictions related to azaan and namaz on public roads. Protesters alleged that the measures were hurting religious sentiments and claimed minority rights were being targeted. The situation escalated after police and CRPF personnel reached the area to clear the roads and disperse the gathering as traffic movement was being affected. During the confrontation, protesters pelted stones at the security forces and vandalised vehicles. Adhikari said the violence left six police personnel and two CRPF jawans injured, adding that 40 people had so far been arrested and that the probe was being directly monitored by the Commissioner of Police.
