Julian Alvarez Confirms He Wants To Leave Atletico Madrid Amid Barcelona Rumors Published By, Last Updated: June 23, 2026, 09:12 IST Alvarez has confirmed he wants to leave Atletico Madrid, saying a transfer is “best for everyone,” as Barcelona, Real Madrid and PSG battle for his signature. Rapid Read Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez (AFP) Julian Alvarez has dropped the clearest indication yet that his time at Atletico Madrid could be coming to an end. The Argentine striker admitted he wants to leave the club and “fulfil his dream" amid mounting interest from some of Europe’s biggest sides — making the revelation after helping his country secure a 2-0 win over Austria in Group J of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Alvarez has become one of the most sought-after names in the transfer market this summer.
Real Madrid saw a reported £129 million bid rejected earlier this month, while Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have also been linked with the 25-year-old. Speaking candidly about his future, Alvarez suggested that all parties are aware of his intentions. “I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer."Julián Alvarez publicly says he wants to leave Atlético Madrid 🚨 pic.twitter.com/YLTibWzAe7 — ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) June 22, 2026 “I spoke with people at the club, with those I had to speak with and the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream," Alvarez said. “It’s not the time to talk about this, but I also can’t hide it. I try to be an honest person." Atletico Madrid have so far refused to entertain offers, pointing to the staggering £431 million release clause included in Alvarez’s contract when turning down Real Madrid’s approach.
However, Barcelona are increasingly viewed as the frontrunner in the race for his signature. The Catalan giants are planning for life after veteran striker Robert Lewandowski and reportedly see Alvarez as the long-term focal point of their attack. Atletico have publicly maintained that the former Manchester City striker is not for sale and have even poked fun at Barcelona’s pursuit in recent weeks. Despite the speculation, Alvarez insisted there is still no clear timeline for a resolution. “It’s not known when it will be resolved," he added. The Argentine remains under contract until 2030 after joining Atletico from Manchester City in an £81 million deal in 2024.
