A massive fire in a building in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, claimed the lives of 15 people, with most victims dying of suffocation. The structure, originally approved as a residential property by the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA), had been illegally operating as a commercial complex for over a decade. The building housed a coaching centre, shops, a pet shop, and a studio.
The premises lacked a fire No Objection Certificate (NOC) and had no emergency exit. Victims, primarily youngsters, were trapped inside the bo like structure due to a narrow staircase and an automated lock door that failed during the blaze. Furthermore, air conditioner compressors blocked the main exit, worsening the crisis. Fire brigade personnel had to break a wall to reach the trapped individuals, but many had already succumbed to the heavy smoke.
The incident raises questions regarding the LDA's failure to monitor and prevent illegal commercial activities in residential areas.
