(PTI photo) At least 13 people were killed and dozens injured after a tempo carrying wedding guests collided with a speeding container truck on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on Monday, police said. The accident took place near Dhaniwari village in Dahanu taluka around 4 pm when the Eicher tempo, packed with more than 50 passengers, was on its way to an engagement ceremony in a nearby village.
The vehicle was carrying guests for the function of one Balaram Jairam Dandekar from Bapugaon Khadkipada village. Police said the tempo collided head-on with a speeding container truck, causing a severe impact that left multiple passengers trapped inside the mangled vehicle. The injured were immediately shifted to the sub-district hospital in Kasa and another hospital in Dhundalwadi for treatment. Officials said around 20 people sustained serious injuries, while several others suffered minor wounds. Rescue operations at the site were completed later in the evening after authorities cleared the wreckage and ensured no one was trapped inside the vehicles. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep grief over the incident, confirming that 13 people had lost their lives in the accident.
He announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the deceased. In an official statement, the Chief Minister said he was in constant touch with district authorities and that senior police officials, including the Superintendent of Police, were present at the accident site to oversee rescue and relief work. Preliminary investigations suggest that the tempo was carrying passengers way beyond its capacity. Excessive speed, a narrow stretch of the road, and the tempo driver losing control of the vehicle are suspected to be the primary causes behind the crash. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
