Pakistan-occupied Kashmir remains on edge as the Joint Awami Action Committee issues a June 23 ultimatum to Islamabad, warning of further escalation if the crisis is not resolved peacefully. The shutdown has entered its 20th day, with road blockades, communication blackouts and shortages of food, medicines and surgical supplies worsening humanitarian conditions across the region.
Hospitals and maternity centres are reportedly struggling as essential supplies run low. JAAC rejects Pakistan’s attempt to portray the protests as anti-state or terror-linked, saying the movement is peaceful and aimed at opposing policies of Pakistan’s rulers.
The group also accuses Islamabad of deceptive negotiations and failing to honour earlier commitments. Reports of arrests, detentions and disappearances are further fuelling anger, while diaspora protests in London are amplifying international attention. With July elections approaching, the unrest is turning into a major test of Pakistan’s legitimacy in PoK.
