(IMAGE: PTI) Nearly 14.2 million students across 132,000 government-run council schools in Uttar Pradesh practiced yoga on Saturday, June 21, 2026, the 12th International Day of Yoga, under the direction of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government said.
More than 78,000 girls enrolled in 746 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas also participated in collective yoga sessions held at school campuses, Block Resource Centres, and district headquarters across the state, according to the official release. Sessions were held in districts including Lucknow, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Kanpur, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Mathura, Basti, Meerut, Kushinagar, Aligarh, and Azamgarh. Students, teachers, Shiksha Mitras, instructors, officials, and parents practiced yoga postures, pranayama, and meditation at the respective venues. A collective yoga session was organized at the new campus of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Uttar Pradesh, led by SCERT Director Ganesh Kumar, where officials, teachers, and staff members participated.
“Yoga is an invaluable legacy of India’s ancient knowledge tradition," Ganesh Kumar said at the session. “By promoting yoga at the school level, significant steps are being taken towards a healthy lifestyle, self-confidence, and balanced personality among children." The state government said the 2026 observance included students pledging to adopt yoga as a daily practice, with teachers encouraging its integration into daily routines throughout the sessions.
