(AI generated image) The Uttar Pradesh government is preparing to introduce a scientifically designed speed management system that will set fixed speed limits across highways, expressways, urban roads and rural stretches to reduce road accidents, officials said on Monday. The draft of the ‘Uttar Pradesh Speed Management Policy’ has been prepared jointly by experts from IIT Kharagpur and the state Transport Department.
The proposal aims to create evidence-based speed limits depending on road type, traffic density and usage patterns, with a focus on preventing fatalities caused by overspeeding. A key meeting of the State Road Safety Technical Advisory Committee was held under the chairmanship of Transport Commissioner Ashutosh Niranjan, where the draft policy was reviewed in detail. Officials discussed proposed speed norms for national highways, expressways, busy city roads, market areas, school and college zones, and rural roads. During the meeting, Niranjan also offered suggestions to further refine the draft, which will now be incorporated before the policy is sent to the state government for final approval. Once cleared, the policy is expected to be implemented across the state in coordination with multiple departments.
Officials said the aim is to ensure safer road usage through scientific speed regulation and reduce the rising number of road accidents. The policy is part of the state’s broader Safe System Approach, which focuses on safe roads, safe speeds, safe users, safe vehicles and post-crash care. The Transport Department is also working on speed audits, stricter enforcement, installation of Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTDs), regular vehicle fitness checks and public awareness campaigns. Experts involved in the project said fixing speed limits based on road design and traffic conditions could significantly improve road safety outcomes and help save lives across Uttar Pradesh.
