India has placed the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance following the Pahalgam terror attack, maintaining that water and terrorism cannot coexist. The government has initiated concrete steps to maximise its water utilisation, including a surprise release from the Baglihar and Salal dams on the Chenab River and enhancing reservoir storage capacity at key hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, the government revived the Tuldul navigation barrage and a Chenab-based drinking water scheme.
In response, Pakistani officials have threatened war and sought intervention from the UN Security Council. A former diplomat stated that India is fully entitled to utilise the eastern rivers and undertake non-consumptive projects on the western rivers. The analysis noted that Pakistan consistently attempts to internationalise bilateral issues and obstructs Indian hydroelectric projects. The discussion highlighted that India will continue to utilise its entitled water resources while demanding an end to cross-border terrorism before any treaty renegotiation occurs.
