The State government is going ahead with the proposal to construct a new spillway at Thottappally in Alappuzha. Replying to a submission by MLA G. Sudhakaran, Water Resources Minister Mons Joseph said that the existing spillway at Thottappally in Ambalapuzha is not completely equipped for full water discharge owing to its age.
The issues concerning the spillway raised by Mr. Sudhakaran have been examined by the government. Based on this assessment, the government has clarified that appropriate action will be taken to ensure efficient water discharge and the complete opening of the estuary. The minister also informed that the construction and renovation works at the existing Thottappally spillway will be carried out using modern technological methods once the required procedures are completed.
An investigation study for the proposed new spillway, to be constructed upstream of the existing structure, has already been conducted by the department. The report has been submitted to the Irrigation Design and Research Board (IDRB) for the preparation of the design for the new spillway.
Steps to finalise the design, in consultation with field officers, are currently under way, the Minister said.
