West Bengal's first BJP budget has triggered a major political storm in the state. Presented as a development roadmap focusing on welfare and jobs, the budget makes a significant policy departure from the previous administration. The allocation for minority affairs and madrasa education has been slashed by more than half.
The sector will receive 2,165 crore rupees in 2026-27, compared to the 5,713 crore rupees allocated by the previous government. While the ruling party terms this a course correction, opposition leaders have strongly criticized the reduction, accusing the government of targeting minority welfare. This has turned the budget into a fresh political battleground.
