NSA Ajit Doval Meets Senior Iranian Security Official On BRICS Sidelines, Reviews West Asia Situation Published By, Last Updated: June 22, 2026, 20:11 IST Ajit Doval meets Irans Ghadir Nezamipour at BRICS NSAs meet in New Delhi, discuss West Asia tensions, BRICS cooperation, and non traditional security threats NSA Ajit Doval, KC met Deputy Secretary for Defense Affairs of the SNSC of Iran, Ghadir Nezamipour on 22 June 2026 on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS NSAs Meeting. (Image Courtesy: X/MEAIndia) Security Adviser Ajit Doval met Ghadir Nezamipour, Deputy Secretary for Defence Affairs at Iran’s Supreme Security Council, on Monday on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS NSAs Meeting in New Delhi. The two reviewed the ongoing situation in West Asia and discussed bilateral ties and cooperation under the BRICS platform, according to a post by Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X. The meeting took place as Indian and Iranian officials gathered in New Delhi for a two-day security conclave that India is hosting as part of its 2026 BRICS Chairship, with Doval chairing the summit.
Iran’s embassy in New Delhi confirmed Nezamipour’s participation on X, noting he was scheduled to attend multiple specialised security sessions alongside bilateral sideline meetings with senior representatives from other participating nations. The Doval-Nezamipour meeting came against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions. India has had to manage its relationship with Iran carefully amid recent conflict in West Asia involving the United States, which disrupted Indian fuel supplies. India is heavily dependent on imported energy, and the US-Iran war hit its supply chains directly. Iran joined BRICS as part of the bloc’s 2024 expansion, which also brought in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Cooperation under the BRICS framework was among the issues discussed on Monday, Jaiswal confirmed. India’s 2026 chairship operates under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability." The Ministry of External Affairs said this year’s core security agenda focuses on non-traditional threats: the use of artificial intelligence in disinformation campaigns, regulation of commercial drones and encrypted messaging networks used by non-state actors, protection of digital infrastructure in developing economies, and cross-border terror financing involving cryptocurrency.
On the margins of the same conclave, Nezamipour also met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Iran’s embassy in New Delhi said the two discussed regional security, implementation of a peace agreement, and strategic cooperation. Nezamipour thanked Beijing for its political support. China’s foreign ministry said Wang told Nezamipour that Beijing “supports Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and national dignity" and welcomed the opening of follow-up consultations between Tehran and Washington. Wang also said China is willing to “strengthen high-level exchanges, consolidate political mutual trust, and deepen practical cooperation" with Iran. Other BRICS members present in New Delhi include Russia, South Africa, and Brazil with Russian security chief Sergei Shoigu is also attending the conclave. Wang last visited New Delhi in August 2025, with India-China ties slowly recovering since the June 2020 border clash in the Himalayas that killed 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese troops.
