(AFP photo) US Vice President JD Vance on Monday said Iranian negotiators did not walk out of the Switzerland talks with the United States, but acknowledged that Tehran did issue threats to leave the table during the discussions, following US President Donald Trump’s warning to strike Iran. Vance made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a first round of high-level negotiations aimed at advancing a framework to end the war. The talks were held at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland and mediated by Qatar and Pakistan.
He said the discussions continued well into the early hours of Monday, indicating that both sides remained engaged despite tensions during the session. According to Vance, technical teams from both countries continued working together even as exit threats were raised. They didn’t walk out. pic.twitter.com/zuDqWTepmi — Clash Report (@clashreport) June 22, 2026 “They didn’t throw a wrench… but they did threaten to walk out… we were negotiating well past 1AM. So, they didn’t walk out. Their technical team is still here working with ours," the US vice president said. The talks in Switzerland had a shaky start, with reports suggesting that the Iranian negotiators had walked out in response to Trump’s warning over Tehran’s support for Hezbollah.
On Sunday, Trump posted on Truth Social, warning of new strikes if Iran did not “immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble". Iran responded sharply. “They would do better to be careful with their statements; our armed forces are ready to respond to them in a different manner. No matter what they say, we are the ones who act," Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on X shortly after Trump’s remarks. The developments came as US and Iranian delegations gathered at the Swiss resort for the talks, following a preliminary memorandum of understanding signed last week. The agreement came after nearly 40 days of fighting, followed by a fragile and repeatedly breached ceasefire. Iranian chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf led Tehran’s delegation, while US Vice President JD Vance headed the American delegation.
