Vance Suggests 'Solution' For Unfrozen Iran Assets: 'Buy US Corn, Wheat For Iranian Benefit' Published By, Last Updated: June 22, 2026, 19:16 IST Vance said any future unfreezing of Iranian assets should be tightly controlled, funding only civilian needs like US farm goods, not armed groups or terrorism. US Vice President JD Vance said Washington expected the Strait of Hormuz to be open without fees. (Reuters) US Vice President JD Vance has suggested that any future release of frozen Iranian assets could be structured to ensure the funds are used for civilian purposes, including the purchase of American agricultural goods “for the benefit of the Iranian people". Speaking to reporters at Switzerland’s Burgenstock resort after the first round of US-Iran talks concluded early Monday, Vance said Washington would seek safeguards to ensure Iranian funds are not diverted to armed groups. “We wanted to make sure that we set up a process where if- if we ever unfreeze Iranian assets, we can ensure that those- that that money, that Iranian money goes to help the people of Iran and not to fund terrorism," he said..@VP says the negotiating team accomplished a “classic Trump deal" in Switzerland.“Where IF Iranian assets are ever unfrozen, they’re going to go to make American farmers richer, and to feed the Iranian people… that’s great for our people, great for the people of Iran, and… pic.twitter.com/C2KmCPvTob — Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) June 22, 2026 Vance further added that US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, along with Qatar, had come up with a “very interesting solution" to ensure the funds were not misused, such as using the unfrozen Iranian assets to buy “American corn and wheat".
“Jared Kushner actually came up with a very interesting solution with the Qataris, where basically – again if there is any frozen Iranian assets that are unfrozen – then we have approval over that process, the Qataris have approval over that process, and then the money would actually go to buy American soy, American corn and American wheat for the benefit of the Iranian people," the vice president said. Vance said the idea would channel Iranian funds into purchasing American agricultural products. “If Iranian assets are ever unfrozen, they’re going to go to make American farmers richer and feed the Iranian people. That’s a very, very good and very classic Trump deal," he noted. Iran has been subject to asset freezes and sweeping sanctions by the US and other Western countries since the 1979 Islamic revolution, which overthrew the US-backed Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. While there is no official figure for the total value of frozen Iranian assets, estimates vary widely.
