Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) is planning to develop dedicated Street Food Hubs across its jurisdiction under the PM SVANidhi scheme, with the aim of providing hygienic, affordable and quality food while creating livelihood opportunities for street vendors and self-help group women. As part of the initiative, Anil Prakash from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), and Jayesh Kumar from the Centre of Excellence, Vijayawada, visited the CMC headquarters in Hyderabad on Monday, and held discussions with CMC Commissioner G.
Srijana and Additional Commissioner (Urban Community Development) on the concept and planning of the proposed hubs. The street food hubs are envisaged as inclusive public spaces catering to people from all sections of society, including auto-rickshaw drivers, workers, students and families. The emphasis would be on maintaining global standards of quality while keeping prices affordable. The proposal also includes promotional campaigns involving celebrities, social media influencers, YouTubers and sportspersons to increase public awareness and attract visitors, said a note.
Special focus will be placed on cleanliness and environmental sustainability. Waste generated at the hubs would be processed through both in-situ and external treatment systems, with biodegradable food waste converted into biogas. Furniture and infrastructure are proposed to use bamboo, stone, granite and recycled materials. The visiting team inspected potential sites and nearby tourist attractions to explore the possibility of integrating the upcoming food hubs into regular tourist circuits. They also interacted with street vendors and self-help group women in different parts of the city to gauge their interest in participating in the project.
Discussions were also held on improving access to the proposed Street Food Hub at Malkam Cheruvu, including the possibility of introducing special bus services for visitors.
