They also said that the Indian community stands in solidarity with the government and the people of Qatar. “At this challenging and difficult time, the Embassy of India and the entire Indian community in Qatar stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Qatar.
We wish for speedy recovery of those injured and hope and pray for the safety of those missing," the Indian Embassy said in a statement posted on X. They also released helpline numbers (+974-55647502 or +974-55384683) and asked people to reach out on this e-mail ID – cons.doha@mea.gov.in – in case they need any assistance. How Did The Explosion At Ras Laffan Industrial Zone Occur? The explosion at the Liquified Natural Gas complex occurred when the workers attempted to restart the plant after operations were halted due to Iranian attacks at the site in March, according to a Reuters report. It was a ‘technical accident’, authorities reportedly said, and that there was ‘no threat to public safety’. Fifty-four people, however, have been injured and eighteen are missing according to media reports. The intensity of the blast was such that windows across Central Doha were rattled causing panick to people as far as 70 kilometers from Ras Laffan.
Significance Of The Explosion The LNG facility at Ras Laffan supplies gas to local industries in the area and Qatar’s power generation sector, the Reuters report noted. The plant not only produced LNG but also ethane and sulphur for supplies meant for domestic and export markets. QatarEnergy has not said yet whether or not the explosion has caused any damage to the plant. This facility, where the explosion, happened, is located in Qatar’s primary LNG production area which is meant for export. The annual production capacity at the plant is 77 million metric tonnes. Since Iran is the host for major US military bases in the region, it was one of hardest hit by Iranian drones and missiles. When Iranian missiles had hit Qatar’s LNG processing sites in March, it slashed 17 percent of its production capacity for exports.
