With this, the UK has seen resignation of six PMs in last 10 years. Starmer’s decision came after facing immense pressure within the Labour Party and growing calls for a leadership change. In a statement delivered outside 10 Downing Street, he said he had listened to concerns within the party and decided to step aside, while remaining in office until a successor is chosen.
His departure comes less than two years after leading Labour to a landslide victory in the July 2024 general election, marking a dramatic turn in British politics. The next United Kingdom general election is scheduled to be held no later than August 15, 2029. Six PMs In Past 10 Years Since 2016 after the Brexit referendum, the country has faced political crisis leading to getting five prime ministers: Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, and Keir Starmer. David Cameron (2010-2016): Cameron, who resigned in 2016 after the Brexit referendum, where the UK voted to leave the European Union- a decision he had campaigned against. He was succeeded by Theresa May. Theresa May (2016-2019): Theresa May struggled to secure parliamentary backing for her Brexit deal. After repeated failures to pass her agreement through Parliament, she resigned in 2019.
Boris Johnson: (2019-2022): Boris Johnson, initially rose on the promise of “getting Brexit done," but his tenure was later engulfed by controversies including the handling of COVID-19 lockdown parties, ministerial resignations and declining party support. He stepped down in 2022 under pressure from his own Conservative Party. Liz Truss (September-October 2022): Her premiership became the shortest in British history as it ended in just 49 days. Her controversial “mini-budget" triggered financial market turmoil and a collapse in confidence, forcing her resignation. She was succeeded by Rishi Sunak. Rishi Sunak (2022-2024): Rishi Sunak, who stabilised markets and government functioning, led the Conservatives into a period of electoral decline. He eventually lost power. Keir Starmer (2024-2026): Starmer was forced out by his own party as missteps and mistakes soured voters’ goodwill for a prime minister who won a landslide election victory two years ago on a promise of steady leadership and economic growth, Associated Press reported.
