UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as both Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party following mounting internal pressure and declining political support. Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer reflected on his two years in office, citing economic growth, rising wages, NHS improvements, and social policy reforms.
He said he had informed King Charles III of his decision and would remain in post until a leadership contest is concluded. The Labour Party has set a timetable for nominations to open on 9 July, with a new leader expected by the summer recess.
Starmer’s resignation comes after growing party divisions and pressure over electoral setbacks. He pledged an orderly transition and said he would support his successor. The announcement triggers a major political transition at the heart of the UK government.
