The All India Muslim Jamaat (AIMJ) has urged Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav to project a Muslim leader as the party’s chief ministerial face for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. In a letter addressed to Akhilesh Yadav, AIMJ president Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi said the Muslim community had played a key role in the political rise of the Yadav family and deserved greater representation in the party. He claimed that Muslims, who make up nearly 22 per cent of Uttar Pradesh’s population, constitute the Samajwadi Party’s biggest political partner, while the Yadav community accounts for around 7 per cent of the state’s population.
The letter said Muslims had helped Mulayam Singh Yadav become chief minister multiple times and later supported Akhilesh Yadav’s elevation to the post. It also claimed that members of the Yadav family, including Akhilesh’s wife, brother, uncle and nephews, benefited from strong backing from Muslim voters. Calling for a change in strategy ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls, the AIMJ appealed to Akhilesh Yadav to field a Muslim leader as the party’s chief ministerial candidate. There was no immediate response from the Samajwadi Party. “I have written a letter to Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav regarding the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. In the letter, I highlighted the sentiments and concerns of Muslims in Uttar Pradesh," said President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi. “I reminded him that Muslims constitute around 22 percent of the state’s population, while the Yadav community accounts for about 7 percent.
Therefore, the largest share and support base comes from the Muslim community," he added. The rise of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi from a Hyderabad-based legislator in 1994 to the leader of a party seeking expansion beyond Telangana showed how demands for independent Muslim political assertion can gradually acquire an electoral dimension.
