(Source: X/ @IndiaInScotland) A statue of the ancient sage Maharishi Sushruta, who is considered by some to be the father of surgery, was unveiled in the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, the United Kingdoms, India’s Consulate General in Scotland announced on X. The ceremony was a celebration of the ‘historical links’ between India and Scotland in the field of medicine and surgery, the consulate said. The statue was installed in the Royal College at the initiative of Professor Chandra Cheruvu, who is a Laparoscopic and Upper Gastro-intestinal Surgeon at the University Hospital North Midlands. Thanking Dr. Cheruvu, the Consulate said on X, “The ceremony celebrated India’s ancient medical heritage, the historical India-Scotland links in medicine and surgery, and the important role played by the Royal College in advancing surgical education worldwide.

He has completed his MBBS from Andhra Pradesh. Who Was Maharishi Sushruta? The sage is considered to be the earliest of physicians and surgeons. He is known for having written the Sushruta Samhita, a treatise on surgeries and what is believed to be the earliest forms of plastic surgery. In his works, he is believed to have described early forms of nose reconstruction, among other surgical procedures. The surgical instruments he described in his treatise were designs based on animals and nature. Though dates vary, he is believed to have lived around 600 BCE.

It was created in 1505 and given royal assent the following year by King James IV, who himself was believed to be amateur surgeon and enthusiast. Today, the institution remains one of the most reputed institutes globally imparting medical training. It boasts of a straight lineage of records dating back to as far as 1581 AD.
