Karnataka state-run transport corporations have proposed a 10 to 12% hike in bus fares due to mounting financial pressure and rising operational costs. The financial burden stems from a recent 12.5% salary hike for employees, costing 873.64 crore rupees, and an increase in fuel prices by 7.81 rupees per litre, adding 395 crore rupees to the expenses.
Additionally, the corporations require 1,271 crore rupees to clear pending employee salary arrears, with 821 crore rupees still outstanding. The Shakti scheme, which offers free bus rides to women, has been identified as a major factor contributing to the losses. The transport department also noted a decline in male passengers from 46% to around 35-36%. The proposed fare hike comes as the state government, under Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, faces increasing financial challenges from its guarantee schemes.
