A political crisis has erupted in Maharashtra as six rebel Members of Parliament from the opposition faction are set to formally join the ruling party faction. Ahead of the official switchover in Mumbai, the opposition party chief has launched a campaign across the state, specifically targeting the strongholds of the rebel leaders to retain voter support. The opposition leader is also holding scheduled meetings with remaining legislators on the first day of the state assembly monsoon session to prevent further defections.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders staged protests outside the assembly against the ruling coalition. The rebel leaders have been accused of compromising their loyalty for political gains, while the defecting politicians maintain they are staying true to the original party ideology. The political realignment comes after a senior union minister previously endorsed the ruling faction as the legitimate party, further intensifying the ongoing battle for the political legacy in the state.
