Rapid Read US Vice President JD Vance during high-level talks in Switzerland. (Reuters) US Vice President JD Vance drew attention on Sunday after making a joking remark about his favourite Indian and Pakistani personalities during high-level discussions with Iran in Switzerland. Addressing reporters after the talks, Vance said in a light-hearted manner that his two favourite Indian and Pakistani personalities were his wife, Usha Vance and Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir. “Since Field Marshal Asim Munir welcomed us with the (Pakistani) Prime Minister in Islamabad, I have joked that I have two very, very important people in my life.
An Indian and a Pakistani. The Indian is my wife, and the Pakistani is Field Marshal Munir," he said. ‘Awkward, Not Funny At All’ Vance’s remarks quickly triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with users sharply divided over his tone and comparison. While some criticised the comment as inappropriate and politically insensitive, others called it “awkward" and “not funny at all." Several users accused him of using humour for political optics, with one remarking, “JD Vance will say anything to keep in power." Others objected to the comparison itself, saying, “Indians should never be compared to Pakistanis," while another user wrote, “I’m crying. Bro has absolutely zero respect or love for his wife. It’s actually insane." Another reaction said, “The Trump administration is already facing criticism, and with such statements, it will face even more criticism." Vance’s remarks about Asim Munir came days after he joked that Pakistan did not have press freedom while explaining why Washington had delayed releasing the terms of the Iran peace deal.
“In the Pakistani and Qatari systems, they don’t quite have the First Amendment and freedom of the press," he said. The Vice President has often spoken about his 12-year interfaith marriage with Usha Vance, whose parents emigrated to the United States from Andhra Pradesh. In a recent podcast appearance, he recalled an early conversation with his mother after telling her about Usha’s Indian heritage. According to Vance, his mother responded by asking, “Which tribe?" he said the remark reflected unfamiliarity with different cultures rather than any intent to demean or mock Usha’s background. Vance and Usha met in 2010 while studying at Yale Law School and married four years later in an interfaith ceremony that included traditional Hindu rites. The couple have three children and is expecting a fourth.
