Dozens of people still remain on ventilator support, a bulletin released by the Health and Family Welfare Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu on Monday said.
Opposition Members, from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and communist parties, of the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly have asked the Speaker to list this ammonia gas leak issue during today’s session for discussion, ANI reported. The AIADMK, reportedly raised a ruckus in the assembly objecting to state minister Parwez trying to give an explanation on the matter in the assembly, under rule 110, even before the opposition had an opportunity to ask questions. Rule 110 of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly to make a suo motu statement in matters of public statement. Importantly, the statement made, under this rule, cannot be debated or voted upon in the house that same day. The gas leak was reported yesterday in a privately-owned seafood processing and exporting unit during routine operations.
A total of 67 people were taken to the hospitals following the incident. The tragedy occurred in the Manjangaranai area of the district. The affected people are currently undergoing treatment at four different hospitals – Venkateshwara Medical College Hospital, Vels Medical College Hospital, Stanley Medical College Hospital, and RGGGH, Chennai. Giving the background for the incident, the government bulletin mentioned above, stated, “the incident is reported to have occurred during routine industrial operations, resulting in the exposure of workers present at the site. Emergency medical response teams, district administration officials, police personnel, fire and rescue services, and public health authorities were promptly mobilized to manage the incident and ensure timely medical assistance to those affected." Upon exposure, the affected individuals showed the typical symptoms associated with ammonia gas inhalation.
