(Representational image) Ahead of the Maharashtra assembly session, the opposition parties submitted a letter to the government highlighting farmers’ distress and seeking loan waivers, which the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said looked like was written by ChatGPT. Taking potshots at the opposition, he also said that they skiped a customary tea-session where they could have raised issues.
Maharashtra assembly’s monsoon session is expected to be a stormy one with the opposition trying to corner the government over issues ranging from farmers’ distress to law and order. The session also comes amid an ongoing rebellion within the camp of Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackrey. Senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Bhaskar Bhaurao Jadhav said the opposition boycotted the customary tea session, for which the government invited them, because he claimed the government is corrupt and has failed on several issues from maintaining law and order, women’s safety and to ensuring wellbeing of the farmers. “This government is not ready to pay attention to the issues of our farmer brothers. Now, with the El Nino situation developing, what is the government’s plan for relief and support?" Jadhav said, while speaking with reporters.
Responding to these allegations, the Chief Minister said, “There are attempts to link us to El Niño as well… No new issue has been raised by the opposition… They mentioned about loan waiver. But we are giving loan waivers even without the elections coming up." In an apparent slight directed at the opposition, he said that the 6-page letter that they submitted seemed to be written using ChatGPT. “It’s good that at least the opponents are starting to use technology…," he said. Usually, El Nino situation means drier conditions in India. Already the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that India is set to receive just 90 percent of its long-term average rainfall. There is an 84 percent combined chance that there will be deficient rain, as per IMD.
