Dowry Harassment, Disturbing Chats, Absconding Husband: Twisha Sharma Death Probe Deepens Published By, Last Updated: May 19, 2026, 09:17 IST The death of Noida resident Twisha Sharma in Bhopal has snowballed into a high-profile case, with allegations of dowry harassment, mental abuse and investigative lapses. A photo of Twisha Sharma (L)/ Twisha Sharma with her husband (R) (Photos: Social Media) The death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma at her matrimonial home in Bhopal has sparked a major controversy, with her family alleging sustained mental and physical harassment, dowry-related pressure, manipulation of evidence and misuse of influence by her husband’s family, which includes a retired judge. Twisha, a Noida resident who married Bhopal-based lawyer Samarth Singh in December 2025 after meeting him through a dating app, was found hanging at her home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. Police are probing the matter as a suspected suicide. At the same time, Twisha’s family has alleged foul play and demanded a CBI investigation along with a second post-mortem examination outside Madhya Pradesh. FAMILY ALLEGES HARASSMENT, DOWRY PRESSURE Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, has alleged that his daughter faced emotional abuse, humiliation and pressure after marriage. Speaking to NDTV, he said dowry demands were never made directly but were allegedly conveyed through expectations and taunts. “Look, in today’s time, dowry is such a word that people demand in various ways without using it. They create a situation in which money is taken out of your pocket. No one says ‘Give me dowry’," he was quoted as saying. According to him, tensions escalated after Twisha lost her job. “After Twisha lost her job, their taunts started: ‘How will we feed you?’ All these things came out," he alleged. Navnidhi Sharma also claimed troubling signs had emerged early in the marriage itself. Recalling an incident from the honeymoon, he alleged Samarth displayed violent behaviour at an airport, after which Twisha reportedly asked her brother whether she had made “a wrong decision". Describing Samarth as “a wolf in sheep’s clothing", he further alleged that the accused family had a history of harassment and claimed assurances given before the marriage “did not materialise".
TWISHA’S MESSAGES DETAIL DISTRESS Messages sent by Twisha to her mother form a key part of the ongoing investigation. In chats with her mother, Twisha repeatedly described feeling trapped and emotionally broken inside her marital home. In one message, she allegedly wrote: “Mujhe bahut zyada ghutan ho rahi hai maa" (I feel suffocated, mother). In another, she reportedly said: “Mera jeevan narak ho gaya hai mummy" (My life has become a living hell, Mom). According to the chats, Twisha also alleged that her husband questioned the paternity of her unborn child and pressured her regarding abortion. She wrote, “Mujhe pooch raha hai vo kiska bacha tha… Ye apne ghatiya pane ki har limit cross kar ke baitha hai. Kaise reh lu iske saath." On May 7, she allegedly pleaded with her mother to come and take her back from Bhopal. “Maa aap mujhe yaha se lene aajao kal please," she wrote. It was also known that shortly before her death, Twisha had messaged a friend on Instagram saying: “I am trapped, bro. Bas tu mat phasna." WHAT HAPPENED ON MAY 12 According to the police, Twisha was found hanging at her matrimonial home on the night of May 12. She was taken to a hospital by her husband and mother-in-law, where doctors declared her dead. Police said they received information from hospital authorities around 11 pm. No suicide note was recovered from the scene. CCTV footage reportedly showed Twisha walking towards the terrace shortly before her death and later being carried downstairs by her husband and two others. Her family has questioned why police were not called before her body was taken to the hospital. The issue is now part of the ongoing investigation. ACP Rajnish Kashyap told IANS that investigators were examining CCTV footage and the sequence of events surrounding her transportation to the hospital. He also acknowledged a lapse in handling the alleged noose recovered from the scene, saying the investigating officer failed to submit it during the post-mortem process initially. FIR, SIT AND SEARCH FOR SAMARTH SINGH Following complaints from Twisha’s family, police registered a case against Samarth Singh and his mother, retired judge Giribala Singh, under provisions related to dowry death and dowry harassment under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
A si member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by ACP Rajnish Kashyap was formed to probe allegations of dowry harassment, assault and destruction of evidence. Police have also announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for information leading to Samarth Singh’s arrest. According to police, he has been absconding since the incident, and multiple teams are conducting searches. Authorities have also contacted the passport office to prevent him from fleeing the country. A Bhopal district court rejected Samarth Singh’s interim bail plea, while Giribala Singh was granted anticipatory bail earlier. FAMILY QUESTIONS INVESTIGATION, SEEKS SECOND POST-MORTEM Twisha’s family has repeatedly alleged irregularities in the investigation and post-mortem procedure. They have demanded that her body be preserved properly and a second post-mortem be conducted at AIIMS Delhi. Navnidhi Sharma alleged that the accused family was using its influence to weaken the case. Speaking to India Today TV, he questioned how anticipatory bail was granted so quickly to Giribala Singh. “The judge’s family is using their influence. This is very unfortunate. The law treats people according to their reputation," he alleged. He also criticised the police response, claiming the family faced difficulty even in getting an FIR registered. “I am having to wage such a fierce battle to secure the justice that is my right," he told ANI. Twisha’s relatives and friends later held protests outside Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s residence in Bhopal and at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, demanding a CBI probe and immediate arrests. “We want justice for Twisha. The case should be transferred to the CBI. We can’t get justice in Bhopal," family friend Kunal Chauhan said during the protest in Delhi. WHAT THE ACCUSED FAMILY HAS SAID In her anticipatory bail plea and subsequent public statements, Giribala Singh denied allegations against her family and claimed Twisha was emotionally unstable and undergoing psychiatric treatment. She alleged Twisha had undergone a Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) and later regretted it. “It’s a profound loss for us because, whatever the circumstances, she was a part of our family," she said.
Giribala Singh also alleged that Twisha showed symptoms associated with withdrawal and claimed she had undergone psychiatric counselling. However, ACP Rajnish Kashyap told IANS that police had not received any concrete evidence supporting claims of drug use. Meanwhile, advocate Enosh George Carlo, representing Samarth Singh, told ANI that the accused family had “full faith" in the judicial system and police investigation. He said they had “absolutely no objection" to a CBI inquiry or a second post-mortem if ordered. WHO WAS TWISHA SHARMA? Twisha Sharma was a 33-year-old MBA graduate from Noida who had worked in marketing and communications. She had also participated in beauty pageants, was a former Miss Pune and had appeared in the Telugu film Mugguru Monagallu. According to details cited in reports, she also identified herself as a certified yoga trainer and Vipassana meditator, while maintaining an interest in acting and filmmaking. (Suicide Prevention.
