(Source: PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed grief over the deadly coal mine explosion in China’s Shanxi province that killed at least 80 people. In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi conveyed condolences to Chinese President Xi Jinping and the people of China following one of the country’s worst mining disasters in recent years. “Upon learning of the mining accident in Shanxi Province, China, which has resulted in loss of life, I am deeply saddened.
On behalf of the people of India, I extend profound condolences and sincere sympathy to President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people. May the families of those who have perished find strength to endure this difficult time. I sincerely pray that those still missing will be found safe and sound at the earliest," PM Modi tweeted. 247 Workers Were Underground At Time Of Blast Reuters, citing Chinese state media, reported that the gas explosion took place late Friday at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan county in northern China’s Shanxi province. Around 247 workers were reportedly underground at the time of the incident. The explosion has claimed at least 82 lives, making it China’s deadliest mining accident since at least 2009.
Rescue and search operations were continuing for workers still unaccounted for. Earlier, the Chinese state media had reported that at least 90 people were killed in the tragedy. The Liushenyu coal mine is operated by Shanxi Tongzhou Group Liushenyu Coal Industry, a company established in 2010 and controlled by Shanxi Tongzhou Coal Coking Group, according to corporate database Qichacha. Xi Jinping Calls For Full Rescue Efforts Following the explosion, President Xi had called for all possible efforts to rescue survivors and treat the injured. He had urged authorities to spare no effort in carrying out relief operations at the mine. Xi also directed the government to investigate the cause of the accident and ensure accountability for those found responsible.
Officials have not yet released further details about the number of injured workers or the exact cause of the gas explosion.
