The goal in Spain’s second match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 helped Yamal equal a 58-year-old record held by Pelé. The Barcelona star is only the second player aged 18 or younger to score the opening goal in a FIFA World Cup match. The first player aged 18 or younger to achieve the feat was Pelé. Pele, who is the only footballer to win three FIFA World Cup titles, was 17 years old when he scored Brazil’s opening goal in the final of the 1958 FIFA World Cup against Sweden.
