(AFP file photo) US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee on Sunday said he feels safer in Jerusalem than in Washington, DC, claiming there are “crazy Hamas people" in the US capital and calling the city a “crazy town". Speaking at a gathering in Israel, Huckabee recounted incidents during a visit to Washington last year and said he faced hostile encounters while moving around the city. “While I was there, on two different occasions, I got surrounded by these pro-Hamas crazy people. One started out as two ladies. It ended up being about 20 people surrounding me, yelling and screaming, and it was really getting close to a little uncomfortable," he said.

He claimed protesters again recognised him and began shouting, prompting intervention from Senator Jim Lankford of Oklahoma, who offered him a ride. He added that the experience left him eager to leave Washington. “I can’t wait to get out of this crazy town and get back to Jerusalem where I feel safe," he said, before stressing that his remarks were not a joke. “I really am anxious to get out of this crazy town and get back to Jerusalem because I feel safe there." US-Israel Ties On Edge Huckabee, a long-time supporter of Israel, has been outspoken in defending Israeli policy even as Washington has recently expressed disagreement with the Netanyahu-led government, particularly over its military operations in Lebanon.
Last week, he sparked controversy after saying the US owes its existence to Israel, a claim that drew attention amid broader political tensions. “Without the Jewish foundation, there would not be an America," Huckabee said, adding that Americans “owe our very existence to what happened in this land." Huckabee’s comments came after US President Donald Trump publicly criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and questioned aspects of Israel’s military escalation in Lebanon. Trump had delivered a sharp on Netanyahu saying, “Without the US, there would be no Israel. Without me, there would be no Israel because no other President was willing to do what I did."
