The impact of the crash left the vehicle in a mangled state.
The people who died in the accident have been identified as 26-year-old Yogesh Negi and 24-year-old Rebecca Jacob. Their bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, an official, cited by news agency PTI, said. The car owner, Angad, who was purportedly driving the car, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital, the official added. The accident occurred on an under-construction stretch of the Mumbai-Vadodara Highway near Badlapur. The group were out to celebrate Yogesh's birthday. After the party, they decided to go for a late-night drive in Angad's car. Preliminary findings suggest that the supposedly speeding BMW hit a road divider, causing the driver to lose control.
The vehicle then overturned multiple times before coming to a halt, police said. The initial probe indicates that speeding and attempting stunts may have been the cause of the accident. According to eyewitnesses, the BMW was seen speeding on the highway several times between 2 am and 3 am. One of them said, "The car sped off twice at very high speeds. The third time, a loud boom was heard. When we arrived at the scene, the car was completely destroyed. A young woman had been thrown quite far, and she died after some time." While sources said that the driver was drunk at the time of the accident, the police have not officially confirmed the claim.
The police were yet to record Angad's statement. His condition is said to be out of danger. "A case of accidental death has been registered, and further investigation is underway," the in-charge of Badlapur police station said. A forensic team collected evidence from the site of the accident. Ends (With inputs from PTI)
