India is entering the next phase of its maritime power with a renewed focus on shipbuilding, ship repair, ship recycling, and maintenance. A 70,000 crore rupee incentive package has been announced for the shipping sector to boost the maritime ecosystem, modernize ports, and expand multi-modal logistics networks like the Sagarmala initiative. This investment aims to reduce trade costs and create new opportunities in coastal regions, particularly in West Bengal, which is poised to become a hub for the blue economy and maritime manufacturing.
The nation has also seen significant growth in defence manufacturing, with total production rising from 40,000 crore rupees in 2014 to approximately 1.8 lakh crore rupees. Defence exports have surged from 700 crore rupees to nearly 40,000 crore rupees, reaching over eighty countries. Strengthening maritime security and self-reliance, the Indian Navy has officially inducted three new vessels: INS Agray, INS Dunagiri, and INS Sanshodhak.
