Three indigenous warships, INS Agray, INS Dunagiri, and INS Sanshodhak, have been commissioned into the Indian Navy at the naval dockyard in Kolkata. The induction of the advanced hydrography vessel, INS Sanshodhak, coincides with World Hydrography Day. The event highlights India's transition from a defence importer to a major manufacturer, underscoring the commitment to self-reliance. In recent years, over forty domestically built warships and submarines have joined the naval fleet, with forty-five more platforms currently under construction.
The maritime sector is emerging as a significant employment engine, supported by a 70,000 crore rupee incentive package for shipping and the involvement of over two hundred micro, small, and medium enterprises in building the new ships. Furthermore, national defence production has expanded to approximately 1,80,000 crore rupees, while defence exports have surged to nearly 40,000 crore rupees, reaching over eighty countries. West Bengal is projected to become a central hub for the blue economy, maritime manufacturing, and coastal development, further strengthening national maritime security and economic prosperity.
