The Indian Armed Forces are holding large-scale International Day of Yoga celebrations on Sunday, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the country’s top military leadership leading programmes at different locations across India. Rajnath Singh participated in the event in Shillong, Meghalaya, alongside Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi joined Yoga Day celebrations in Tezpur, Assam, while Navy Chief Admiral K Swaminathan will take part in the programme in Kolkata.
The Indian Air Force marked the occasion through the Common Yoga Protocol at stations across the country. The service said physical fitness, mental resilience and inner balance remain essential attributes of every air warrior and form the foundation of operational readiness. Yoga sessions are being organised from Leh in the north to Car Nicobar in the south, and from Tawang in the east to Dwarka in the west. In addition to serving personnel and their families, school students and NCC cadets participated in programmes at several Air Force stations. The Army has already begun its Yoga Day outreach in several parts of the Northeast. Troops of Spear Corps have conducted yoga sessions across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, including at Parashuram Kund, Golden Pagoda, Tezu, Chaglagam, Hayuliang, Kibithu, Walong War Memorial and Helmet Top.
Similar programmes have also been organised in the Siang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh and at Leimakhong Military Station in Manipur. Indian Navy Chief performed Yoga with Navy Personnel in Kolkata. He then took part in the commissioning of three naval ships with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing", focuses on the role of yoga in maintaining physical health, mental well-being and quality of life across all age groups. Over the years, yoga has become an integral part of the armed forces’ fitness culture. Military officials say it supports endurance, concentration, flexibility and stress management, qualities considered vital for personnel operating in demanding environments.
