A massive five-day demolition drive by the Western Railway and Mumbai Police has cleared illegal hutments at Gareib Nagar in Bandra East. While one hundred eligible hutments were spared, their illegal upper structures were demolished. The clearance is a crucial step for the future development of the Bandra Terminus, which plans to accommodate fifty additional passenger trains and upgraded infrastructure.
The demolition follows a lengthy legal battle in the Bombay High Court that began in two thousand and seventeen. Excavators are currently clearing the debris from the site. The Bandra station serves as a vital link to the Bandra Kurla Complex, a key financial center. Commuters hope the freed land will lead to wider roads, eased traffic congestion, and the development of a world-class railway station.
The operation faced resistance, including a stone-pelting incident three days ago that resulted in arrests, but the area has now been successfully secured for future infrastructure projects.
