Ajith Francis, hailing from Thiruvananthapuram, has been elected to the influential policy council of the Internet Corporation for Assigned names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN sets the contours of global internet domain policy. Mr. Francis, who has been active in the internet policy ecosystem for nearly a decade, will now play a significant role in ICANN’s policy-making process, especially in the area of generic names, according to a statement.
He was elected unopposed to the prestigious 21-member council, which is often referred to as the ‘Parliament of ICANN,’ the statement said. Based in Berlin, Mr. Francis is currently Senior Policy Manager at Public Interest Registry, the ICANN subsidiary that regulates the.org domains.
He was educated at the Sciences PO University, Paris, and the George Washington University, Washington DC. He has worked with Google, Planning Commission of India
and Internet and Jurisdiction Policy Network, a Paris-based think tank.
