The Telangana government is considering supplying milk procured by Vijaya Dairy to about 27 lakh students studying in government schools and children attending Anganwadi centres as part of efforts to strengthen the dairy sector and improve nutritional support. The proposal came up for discussion at a high-level review meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka at the Secretariat on Saturday.
Directing officials to prepare accurate estimates of total milk production, the Deputy Chief Minister asked officials to undertake field visits to ascertain the actual number of milk-yielding animals and assess milk output and submit a comprehensive report at the next review meeting. Stressing the need for a clear policy on milk procurement prices, Mr. Bhatti directed officials to ensure timely payment of bills to dairy farmers without any pending dues.
He also instructed that payments for milk supplied to schools be made directly by the concerned welfare departments to the agencies to prevent delays in payments to farmers. The Deputy Chief Minister said prompt payments would strengthen the financial position of farm families and encourage them to continue supplying milk to dairies.
Animal Husbandry Minister Vakiti Srihari and senior officials participated in the meeting.
