Open and distance learning has emerged as a powerful instrument for democratising education and making knowledge accessible to all sections of society, observed Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot. While pointing out that open and distance learning systems have opened the doors of knowledge to millions of learners, who are unable to access conventional educational institutions due to social, economic, or geographical constraints, Mr. Gehlot said such systems will play a vital role in realising the vision of a developed India by 2047 and in building a knowledge-based society. The Governor was speaking at the academic meet ‘From access to excellence: The future pathways of distance education’ and the book release ceremony of ‘Education: An overview of formal open and distance learning’, organised by Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in Mysuru on Saturday.
Congratulating KSOU Vice-Chancellor Sharanappa V. Halse and his team for organising the event, the Governor said the theme of the deliberations was closely linked to the future of higher education in India and reflected a strong vision of democratising education and universalising knowledge. He noted that the education sector is undergoing an unprecedented transformation driven by technology, digital resources, and innovative teaching methods. These developments have made education more accessible, inclusive and effective. Highlighting the role of distance education in women’s empowerment, the Governor said that many women are unable to pursue regular education because of family responsibilities.
Distance education enables them to continue their studies from home and become self-reliant. He added that such systems also provide valuable opportunities for persons with disabilities and socially disadvantaged sections, thereby contributing to inclusive growth. With regard to the book titled ‘Education: An overview of formal open and distance learning’ authored by former KSOU Vice-Chancellor N.S. Rame Gowda, Mr. Gehlot expressed confidence that the book would serve as a valuable guide for policymakers, educators and researchers seeking to understand the changing educational landscape. The Governor further stated that with the growing use of artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and online learning platforms, education would become more accessible, flexible and quality-oriented.
